The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has released a draft plan for managing 2.5 million acres of Federal public land in Western Oregon. The planning area encompasses BLM’s Coos Bay, Eugene, Medford, Roseburg and Salem Districts and the Lakeview District’s Klamath Falls Field Office.
The plan is available on line at http://www.blm.gov/or/plans/rmpswesternoregon. The plan presents 5 alternatives for managing these lands into the future. Depending on the alternative, between 18,000 and 135,000 acres are proposed for closure to target shooting.
The BLM is hosting open houses to discuss the plan. The schedule of meetings for discussion of the recreation component of the plan is as follows:
June 24th: Recreation workshop, Eugene, OR
June 25th: Recreation workshop, Salem, OR
Information on the times and locations of the meetings can be found here.
The public comment period is open until July 23rd and comments can be emailed or on the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management’s website.
If you recreate on BLM Western Oregon lands, including target shooting and hunting, the recreation workshops will be important to understanding the impact of the draft plan on your activities. Please also take the time to review BLM’s alternatives in terms of acreage that is proposed for closure to target shooting and acreage that would be emphasized for target shooting. Please attend one of the meetings and review the draft plan and submit comments voicing your opposition to any arbitrary closure of public lands to target shooting.
