OSSA SB592 Analysis
- SB592 seeks to remove the ability to use lead shot for use in upland bird hunting (waterfowl hunting eliminated lead shot – at the national level in 1991)
- The debate on the impact of lead shot in upland bird hunting on wildlife and humans is still ongoing. For example, Project Upland has studied and concluded “… there was a low potential for lead poisoning in upland hunting scenarios compared to lead deposition associated with waterfowl or dove hunting.” There are also many studies through groups that warn of lead accumulation in wild birds.
- The national level ban on lead shot for waterfowl was implemented in 1991 to protect water and the wildlife, including humans.
- OSSA will not debate the merits of this bill. However, as with the 1991 ban of lead shot for waterfowl, OSSA would like to see this legislation at the national level to enable consistency for hunters and prevent inadvertent use of improper shot in hunting.
